Barb Adams and Alma Allen showcase the home, “the beloved symbol in American folk art that has been used in samplers, hooked rugs, painting and, of course, quilts” in this wonderful book. I confess that I’m in love with the designs these two incredibly talented women come up with over and over again. I now have three of their books and I plan on collecting them all! Really, if you love the look of the projects in the photos I've attached, you’ll love this book.As with the other two Adams & Allen books I have, Home Sweet Home starts out with a featured quilt, worked up two ways. One created by Adams, and one by Allen, each putting their own unique stamp on the finished quilt. I love this because it inspires me to apply my color choices to their design. The featured quilt is, to me, absolutely gorgeous and would have been enough for me! The additional ten lovely projects in this book are just icing on the cake.The book is set up by seasons. In the winter, we are instructed in how to make “Family Tree Ornaments,” which are not quilted but instead use copper tape and a soldering iron to make frames for small family photos. (Sorry, I wasn't able to scan a photo of this project.) There is also a wool appliqued, 49 x 12½-inch “Holiday Table Runner” depicting homes around the block.Spring arrives with “Nosegay for Mother,” a lovely, 85 x 85-inch (queen size) quilt sprinkled with bouquets of spring tulips. A smaller project for spring; “Sweet Pea” is a charming 28 x 28-inch wall hanging or doll quilt featuring appliqued flowers and vines. Finishing up the projects for spring are two 20 x 22-inch hooked rugs, displaying homes and tulips.“Summer Stars” an 88 x 88-inch (queen size) quilt, which showcases star blocks surrounded by appliqued vines, and “Old Glory” 92 x 92-inch quilt waving the stars and stripes, are the summer projects.Autumn brings us, "Autumn Brunch" a wonderful 42 x 20-inch painted canvas table runner (which I intend to use as a floor cloth) displaying gorgeous sunflowers. Finishing up the projects, is a quilted version of the painted table runner appropriately named “Sunflower Charms.” (The photo of this project is spread over two pages so I was unable to scan it.)The quilts in this book are not for beginners. While the instructions for needle turn applique (using freezer paper), and creating the blocks (for all the quilts) are easy to understand, they assume we know what we’re doing when it comes to cutting, seam allowances, pressing properly, sewing the blocks together, making and sewing on binding, making a quilt sandwich, and finishing the quilt. Those who are not sure about any of these techniques will probably need further assistance or additional resources covering them. I have achieved excellent results using The Quilter’s Bible by Linda Clement and The Quilter’s Edge by Darlene Zimmerman. Also, if you own any other quilting books that include excellent detailed instructions (Fons & Porter’s books come to mind) then you could use them.There are full-size templates for all the applique pieces.
